Housing : September 2008
HOUSING SEPTEMBER 2008 97 The urgent need to conserve our water is generating some impressive innovations -- especially in greywater systems and water tanks. But while it's becoming mandatory to install an alternative supply to mains water, many people don't want large, unsightly systems taking up a good part of their precious gardens or blocks. That's where Azuratec's SlabTank comes in. The winner of this year's HIA-Boral GreenSmart Product of the Year award, the SlabTank system, captures and stores rainwater, and fits seamlessly into the waffle or raft slabs of a new house or garage without significant impact on the slab design or reinforcement. SlabTanks are typically aimed at new home construction. However, they can be used in most situations where a new slab is being created, such as renovations and extensions. The tanks use similar technology to aboveground filtration systems, are flexible, and use flexible interconnections so there are no concerns with normal slab movement. The system is also tested and inspected during manufacture and Save water without sacrificing precious land space with this award-winning tank system. Jeanie Watson reports. square peg square hole Product Review Dion Bright, director of Azuratec -- Integrated Water Systems, says 'the idea behind Azuratec was to build a business around the intelligent management of residential water and, where possible, try to integrate the various sources to get the best savings for the best space rather than each being considered separately by different contractors'. Along with mains water, Azuratec identifies three major aspects to residential water and has products for each system including: • rainwater -- SlabTank • stormwater -- StormTank • greywater -- OasisGT600. The best part is that the three systems can be seamlessly integrated together. 'In one home you can easily recycle, store and reuse greywater on a daily basis around the home, capture rainwater as it falls for lifestyle uses outside, and have excess water from heavy rain events safely channelled away to the street without fear of flooding drains etc.,' says Dion. 'All these products are simple and installed for the builder by Azuratec. The tanks are hidden yet accessible -- the benefits are clear.' Seamless integration
